1025 | Ulysses Ulysses 2014, with its breadth of dimension and creamy texture, offers rich tobacco, ripe plum and fig aromas balanced beautifully by a long, supple finish. 2014 was characterized by a very dry early winter with heavy rains in February and continued rainfall in March and April (February: 11.7 inches | March: 4 inches | April: 2 inches). Average temperatures were higher than historical averages, with minor heat spikes in June (101F) and in July (103F). 1008 | Vin De Constance 500ml Bright light gold in colour. A delicately perfumed yet elevated nose with flavours of white peach, citrus blossom and orange zest. There is an intriguing creaminess on the nose followed by nutmeg and lemon curd. The palate abounds with complex flavours of oak spice, ginger and bright fruit. A delicate balance between sugar and acidity creating a seemingly dryer style of Vin de Constance. The wine concludes with a long and evolving finish with texture and a delicate spice. 2019 saw some relief from the 5 year drought with a cooler, windier and wetter build up to harvest giving us smaller concentrated berries, ideal pH levels, fresh acidity and complex wines. The 2019 Muscat de Frontignan harvest was very short, taking place from late February until late March. In this amount of time we were able to make 26 different passes raging from high acidity to the later portion of very ripe raisins. Each pass was vinified separately initially and then blended together during the latter part of fermentation in order to balance out the sugar, alcohol and acidity. This allows the fermentation to stop naturally and without any intervention | Klein Constantia | South Africa | Muscat de Frontignan | 2017 | 500ml | White | Sweet | 102,00 €
988 | Vina Tondonia Rioja Bosconia Red Reserva This wine has evolved perfectly showing a deep ruby colour with shades of orange. Its nose is persistent, full bodied and showing a lot of mature fruit, being dominated by the Tempranillo grape. Its taste is round, smooth, fresh, full of body and persistent. A year officially rated as VERY GOOD. The year passed without severe climatological incidents, in lack of spring frost; but denoted with abundant spring precipitations and after the harvest. However, a mild and drier summer favoured the growth and health of the grapes; which led to a not very abundant, but lightly superior harvest than the previous one with similar quality. The weather conditions were exceptionally favourable during all the final phase of the vegetative cycle, something that is always decisive for the quality of the harvest. Our vineyard enjoyed the optimal conditions necessary to get a health state of the fruit almost perfect; and with balanced parameters of colour, acidity, degree of alcohol and balance during the maturation. All of these characteristics let us get a high quality harvest with a little inferior final volume compared to previous years. The harvest started the 6th of October in «Viña Gravonia» with the white varieties, the 9th of October in «Viña Tondonia» with the red varieties; and finished the 30th of October after the harvest of «Viña Cubillo» and «Viña Bosconia». | R. 987 | Vina Tondonia Rioja Cubillo Crianza Clear, bright ruby. Nose: Fresh and slight aroma to licorice with consistent texture and persistent aroma. Taste: Smooth, fresh and persistent. Vintage rated as VERY GOOD by the DOC Rioja Board. The 2012 vintage was constrained by the scarce pluviometry, 25% lower than usual in our region. It was an especially dry year until well into the Fall. 35% of the total precipitation was concentrated in the last three months of the year. This low pluviometry and the spring and summer high temperatures, entailed a very important brought forward of the harvest, similar to the previous year. Although the rains that started the 11th of October meant that the harvest continued until the 18th of October, five days later than the 2011 harvest, however this is still an early date for what is usual in Haro. Harvest started on the 4th of October with the white varieties. These same conditions caused a significant reduction in the number and weight of the bunches and therefore, the final production of our cultivation was lower than expected in a normal year. This year quality of wines of our House, both whites and reds, was very good due to a magnificent healthy stage and a good balance between the alcohol content and the polyphenols. The wines continue to develop favourably in terms of freshness and fineness for its good aptitude to ageing in barrel and long age-worthy. | R. 986 | Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva Vibrant red leading slightly towards amber. Nose: Light fresh texture with notes of vanilla and dried berry aromas. Taste: Rich, very dry, smooth, developed. Firm tannins and good balance. This vintage was qualified as VERY GOOD by the DOC Rioja Board. The wine growing campaign proceeded as usual except for the heavy rains that took place in June, which however didn’t really affect the grapes’ setting. After these fertilization and absence of spring frosts there was a dry and hot summer, free of cryptogamic/fungal diseases, that resulted in an abundant harvest. We observed certain maturation disparities which could have been solved along October due to its appropriate climate for a restful and selective harvest. The collecting work began in Viña Gravonia in September 22nd and was extended until the 25th for the white varieties. For the red varieties the harvest restarted at Viña Tondonia in October 7th and didn’t stop until it was finished by October 24th. | R. 1074 | Vinsanto Natural Sweet 0,375 Lt 16 Years Old Deep amber color with toffee shades, intense dried fruit aromas such as raisins, honey and butter caramel of mineral character. Full and velvety mouth with a sweetness that balances the refreshing acidity. Long aftertaste of candied orange peels. On the island of Santorini, which is referred to by foreign travel guides as Greece's best vine region, a sweet wine was produced and continues to be made from sun-dried grapes without any added sugar or alcohol, and aged for at least 2 years in oak barrels.
It is the most authentic continuation of 'passos' sweet wine as the ancients used to call it, which the islands of the Aegean Sea are famous for.
During the Middle Ages merchant, crusader and worshipper ships on their way to Constantinople, to the ports of the White Sea, the Venetian markets and to the Holy Land supplied themselves with this sweet wine by stopping off at Santo Erini-Santorini, as the ancient volcanic island of Thera had been baptized, most likely by Italian sailors, during the Dark Ages.
The 'passos' of Thera took the name Santo from the first component of the island's new name. This name became vino di Santorini - vino Santo, Vinsanto during the years of the Frankish occupation in the Venetian markets and across the eastern Mediterranean.
This name - in Greek 'Βινσάντο' - has survived until today. It simply means: wine of Santorini, and stands for the island's traditional sun-dried wine. And so it is a 'historical name of origin' and one of the very few that have remained 'alive' and is now protected in Greece.
It is a naturally sweet VQPRD (vin de qualité produit dans une region determinée) of Santorini and, in other words, is produced from the island's white varieties Assyrtiko, Aidani and Athiri. The wine owes its colour to the grapes' exposure to the sun for 12 to 15 days and also to its ageing in oak barrels.
Why do we age our Vinsanto for 6 years at Hatzidakis Winery?
Regulations concerning Vinsanto make it clear that it is compulsory to age the wine in oak barrels for 2 years.
Behind the 6-year ageing process of Hatzidakis Vinsanto hides a little story ...which Konstantina's mother used to tell her children.
Konstantina Chrysou Hatzidakis' grandfather, Iakovos Zorzos, was a viticulturalist. He had his own 'canava' (winery) in the northern part of the village of Pyrgos Kallisti where he made his own homemade wine just like most of the families on Santorini did.
He had 12 children with his wife Margarita. Each time one of their children was born, they wrote the name of the child on the Vinsanto barrel of that year. When the child reached 6 years of age they would open the barrel and drink the wine.
Charidimos and Konstantina did the same thing. When their daughter Stella was born it was the first year of production of the Hatzidaki Vinsanto and when she turned 6, in 2003, they bottled their first Vinsanto and put it on the market!
In this way they kept the family tradition going and they discovered that their grandfather must have known a little secret because after 6 years of ageing in oak barrels, the wine acquired a particularly unique character and a wonderful colour. | Hatzidakis Winery Santorini | Greece | Aidani ⋅ Assyrtiko | 2013 | 375ml | White / Sweet | Sweet | 34,75 €
